Shiramba Kamuy

Ainu · deity · primordial · deity

Shiramba Kamuy is the Ainu kamuy of wood, grain and all other forms of vegetation, and therefore also of the many household tools that contain wood. Ashkenazi (Handbook of Japanese Mythology, 2003) records that he is sometimes portrayed as the brother of Hash-inau-uk Kamuy, the goddess of the hunt — the kinship already noted from the other side in the existing ainu_hash_inau_uk_kamuy entry, which calls her 'a sister of Kamuy-huci the hearth-goddess and of Shiramba Kamuy the vegetation-god'. Authored here as the vegetation-kamuy whose attested kinship is the sibling-bond to Hash-inau-uk Kamuy.
