Yayik

Altai · numen · Altai traditional religion; continuing · numen

Yayik is a mediating celestial spirit, described in Anokhin's shamanic texts as the servant and emissary of Ülgen. During the nights-long ascent to the upper world the kam meets Yayik, who carries the sacrifice on toward the highest heaven and returns word of whether it has been accepted. In domestic cult Yayik was also honored as a guardian of the household and its herds, represented by a cord or ribbon effigy kept within the dwelling. The figure belongs to the class of intermediary powers set between Ülgen and humankind, alongside the watchers Suila and Karlyk.
