TWO BEOWULFS IS THE POEM'S OWN PROBLEM AND NOT THIS REGISTRY'S. The manuscript writes 'Beowulf' for this Dane in the opening lines, which is one of the reasons the poem has the title it has; the record files him under Beow, the reading the genealogies support, and carries the manuscript form as an alias. His name means 'barley', which is why the argument about whether the Scylding line begins with a corn-god is an argument at all.
