Youngest son of Hrethel; king of the Geats and lord and maternal uncle of Beowulf. The one Beowulf-figure with external historical anchoring: his fatal raid on the Frankish/Frisian coast is the "Chlochilaicus" raid recorded by Gregory of Tours (c. 521 CE). After his death Beowulf eventually took the Geatish throne.
