THE ONE FIGURE IN THIS BATCH WHOSE POPULARITY IS DOCUMENTED BY SOMEONE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. Around 797 Alcuin wrote to a bishop asking what Ingeld has to do with Christ — Quid Hinieldus cum Christo? — which is the earliest evidence that anybody in England was still listening to these stories, and it survives because a churchman wanted them stopped.
