Vanmegaprana

Apinajé · deity · Apinajé traditional religion; continuing · deity

Vanmegaprana is the demiurge to whom Apinayé tradition attributes the peopling of the world. In the account of the origin of the different peoples he draws them out of the water, fashioning the White and the Black peoples from fish. He acts alone, without the kin or narrative partners that surround the Sun, the Moon, and the Jaguar, and the sources on him are thinner than on the great myth cycles; his name is recorded but its exact form and segmentation remain uncertain.
