The Awï peye, the 'shamans of the enemies,' are celestial ritual specialists belonging to the world of the sky. Their name binds together the two poles that organize Araweté cosmology, the enemy (awï) and the shaman (peye), locating within the heavens the powers of foreign dead. They belong to the crowded population of celestial beings alongside the Maï, part of the alterity that the Araweté person must confront and, through death, ultimately join.
