Ts'ob is an archaic supreme thunder-god, believed by scholars to have been shared by the Avaro-Ando-Didoi and Nakh peoples in the period following the break-up of their common ancestral community. His thunder-and-lightning nature survives most plainly in the Andic name for the rainbow, ЦӀорцӀив, understood as 'the bow of Ts'ob'. Like Bečed he was invoked at the start of undertakings and appealed to for the staying of hail and destructive rain. Among the Avars proper Ts'ob was gradually eclipsed by Bečed, his name shrinking to the fixed expression 'the mercy of Ts'ob', a synonym for divine grace.
