Div

Azerbaijani · numen · Azerbaijani traditional religion; continuing · numen

The div is the great ogre-demon of the Azerbaijani wonder-tale (nağıl), a gigantic, often many-headed being of monstrous strength who inhabits deep wells, mountain caves and the subterranean or otherworldly lands beneath the earth. Divs abduct princesses, hoard treasure, and set the standing obstacle that the tale's hero must overcome, as in the widely told 'Melikməmməd', where the youth descends to the underworld to fight them. Colours mark their ranks, the White Div (Ağ div) and Black Div (Qara div) being the most formidable, and a recurring motif hides a div's life outside its body in a bird or bottle, so that it dies only when that vessel is broken. The name descends from Old Iranian daiva, the class of beings that Zoroastrian reform had cast down from godhood into demonhood.
