Chantico

Aztec/Mexica · deity · cosmogonic · deity

Chantico is the fire in the house, as against Xiuhtecuhtli's fire at the centre of the world, and the distinction mattered: the hearth was not a lesser altar but a different one, with its own goddess and its own offerings. Her myth is unusually domestic too — she eats paprika on fish on a fast day and is turned into a dog for it, which is a punishment with the scale of a household quarrel rather than a cosmic one.
