Tepeyollotl
Aztec/Mexica · deity · cosmogonic · deity
Tepeyollotl is what a mountain sounds like from inside. He is a jaguar — the animal that lives in the cave mouth and is heard before it is seen — and he is the earthquake, and he is the echo: the Mexica took the sound that comes back out of a cave to be the mountain's own heart answering. He is also a face of Tezcatlipoca, which is the normal condition of Mexica deities and the reason the pantheon resists being counted. The registry carried Tezcatlipoca and none of his aspects.
