Tonacacihuatl
Aztec/Mexica · deity · cosmogonic · deity
Tonacacihuatl is the half of the first principle that the sources are clearest about being female, in a cosmology that insists the beginning of things was a couple and not a single figure. The Mexica put her at the top of the world and then, in practice, addressed almost every prayer to somebody else — which is the usual fate of a high god who has finished the work.
