Bagheshwar Deo

Baiga · deity · Baiga traditional religion; continuing · deity

Bagheshwar Deo, 'the Lord of Tigers', also called Bagh Deo or Bagesur Dev, is the tiger-god and supernatural master of the tigers of the forest, worshipped by the Baiga together with the Gond, Korku and Kol. The Baiga hold the tiger to be their brother and protector, and in some tellings their own ancestor, so that the beast will not harm those who keep faith with the jungle. His shrine, the Bagheshwar Pat, stands outside the village as a stone platform where offerings are made; in the creation myth the first Baiga sacrificed a pig to the tiger-god's seat as he bound the powers of the new earth. He is invoked both for protection from man-eaters and, by the Baiga's tiger-charmers, for mastery over the animal itself.
