Warimi is the great transformer and culture hero of the Barasana, born of trickery and endowed with the power to change his shape at will. In childhood, when he bears the name Rijocamacu, he perpetually escapes the daughters of the supernatural Meni who pursue him; but when the youngest at last seizes him he turns in an instant into a helpless infant and is set to her breast, only to grow again and continue his exploits. His career belongs to the cycle of the He, the ancestral spirit-world, and he stands alongside the thunder culture-heroes as an agent through whom the shape of the present world and its rituals is fixed. The precise ties binding him to Meni and to the Thunders shift between tellings, and the sources treat this fluidity as intrinsic to the hero rather than as confusion to be resolved.
