Yawira

Barasana · demigod · Barasana traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Yawira is the daughter of Fish Anaconda and the wife of the earth ancestor Yeba. In the long marriage myth she and her father draw Yeba out of his wild forest existence, teaching him to plant and eat cultivated food and so bringing him into the settled, civilised order. Through her the line of water people is joined to the line of earth people, and the produced garden, above all manioc, enters the human world. She embodies the affinal woman whose incoming knowledge domesticates the male ancestor, a pattern that Barasana marriage continues to echo.
