The Earth is the primordial feminine ground of the Baruya cosmos. In the first age the Sun and the Moon lay joined to her, indistinguishable from her body, and the world had no order. The making of the cosmos was the rising of the luminaries into the sky above her: the Sun ascended first and the Moon followed, and only then did day and night, the seasons, and human generation become possible. Spoken of in the feminine, the Earth remains the matrix beneath the ordered sky rather than an active agent within it.
