Arensnuphis

Beja · deity · Beja traditional religion; continuing · deity

Arensnuphis, whose Egyptianized name Ari-hes-nefer means 'the good companion', was a distinctly Nubian god of the frontier venerated by the peoples of Lower Nubia and by the Blemmyes at Philae. Portrayed as a plumed desert hunter and occasionally in leonine form, he was incorporated into the circle of Isis and Osiris as a guardian and a substitute son, standing watch at the goddess's temple gates. His cult reached from Musawwarat es-Sufra deep in Meroitic Nubia to the island sanctuary of Philae, where the Nubian king Arqamani endowed a temple in his honour, marking him as one of the indigenous divinities the Beja's ancestors carried in their devotion.
