Bakunawa

Bicolano · numen · primordial · numen

Bakunawa is the giant sea-serpent of Bicolano (and wider Philippine) cosmology, believed to cause eclipses by rising to devour the moon. The belief is attested for the Bicol region in Marcos de Lisboa's early Vocabulario de la lengua Bicol, which records the term for the serpent that swallows the moon; during eclipses people made noise by beating drums, bamboo, and hollow trunks to frighten it into releasing its prey. In Bicol lore the serpent is regarded with a measure of awe and respect as a cosmic force rather than pure evil. It stands apart from the fire-and-Mayon pantheon of Gugurang and Asuang, being an independent celestial menace recorded in its own right.
