Tandayag is the enormous wild boar of the Ibalong epic, the first of the land's monstrous beasts to be overcome. The name reflects a Bikol term for something of gigantic size. The boar destroyed the grain fields that Baltog had newly planted at Tondol; when the hero killed it barehanded and displayed its jawbones on a talisay tree, its carcass became a marvel that drew clans from surrounding districts. As a named menace of the wilds it belongs to the same class of monstrous adversaries as the serpent Oryol and the beast Rabot who challenge the epic's heroes.
