Fukan is the human wife of the culture-hero Lumawig in the Bontoc creation-and-flood cycle. In the version recorded by Cole, after a flood sent over the world only a brother and sister, Fatangna and Fukan, survive; Lumawig preserves them, bids them marry to repopulate the earth, and the Bontoc valley is settled by their descendants. In Lumawig's own legend it is Fukan, a Bontoc woman, whom the descended god chooses for his wife, making her at once a flood-ancestress and the consort of the supreme deity. She is mortal, the named foremother of the Bontoc rather than a goddess.
