Tigbas, Patron of Good Government

Bukidnon · deity · Bukidnon traditional religion; continuing · deity

Tigbas is the Bukidnon divinity associated with good government and just order. In Cole's ethnography he is named the most respected of the lesser deities, set in pointed contrast to the dreaded god of calamity who was the most feared and the last to receive sacrifice. As the patron of right rule, Tigbas reflects the value the Bukidnon placed on the just authority of their datus and on social order; he is counted among the individually named spirits serving under the supreme creator Magbabaya, won over, like the others, through customary offerings.
