Father of the sage-king Shun; the "Blind Old Man" of the Confucian-canonical filial-piety narrative. With his second wife and Shun's half-brother Xiang, he repeatedly attempted to murder Shun, who nevertheless continued to honor and serve him — the foundational Mencian case-study of filial piety persisting through mistreatment.
