Jingwei

Chinese · deity · mythic prehistory · deity

Her parentage is given in the sources as Yandi, the Flame Emperor, who is identified with Shennong in the standard reckoning — the record uses the corpus's existing Shennong and says so rather than opening a second record for a second name. 'Jingwei fills the sea' is the Chinese idiom for a hopeless task pursued anyway, the companion piece to Kuafu chasing the sun, and between them they are the two commonest metaphors in the language for persistence. The registry held Shennong and not his daughter.
