Mazu

A girl from a small island who is now the Queen of Heaven, and the promotions were transactional: the Yuan raised her because its capital ate grain carried by Fujianese sailors who prayed to her, and a state that depends on a sea route has an interest in the goddess of that route. Her cult is among the largest in the world by adherents and by number of temples, and the registry — which held the Jade Emperor, Guanyin and the Kitchen God — did not have her.
