Meng Po
Chinese · deity · mythic · deity
Every Chinese person who has ever died has drunk this, and the fact that she gathers the ingredients herself from ordinary ponds is the part the stories linger on. She is the mechanism that makes reincarnation bearable and also the reason nobody remembers: the entire folk genre of people who avoided the soup, or drank it badly, or recognise a stranger for no reason they can name, runs off her. The registry held the whole of Chinese religion without her.
