Waija (also Waya) is the second of the two exogamous patrimoieties of the Grand Valley Dani, the complementary half to Wida. Each half is associated in tradition with particular birds, and the two together structure marriage, alliance and ceremony; a person of Waija must take a spouse from Wida. Dani tradition sets the origin of the two moieties in the primordial ordering of humankind. As with Wida, sources differ on whether a single named ancestor lies behind the name or whether Waija denotes the ancestral half as such.
