Kune

Dargin · numen · Dargin traditional religion; continuing · numen

Kune is the domestic spirit of Dargin belief, the counterpart of the house-guardian found across the Caucasus and beyond. She is described as a tall woman with heavy breasts and long red hair falling to her feet, dwelling within the home and bound to its hearth and prosperity. Her presence and favour were tied to the well-being of the household, and encounters with her belonged to the everyday demonology that survived the coming of Islam in ritual, custom and folk narrative. The name kune covers the type of the house-and-hearth spirit that stands at the centre of Dargin domestic religion.
