Kauwari is the bird whose cry, raised at the sight of a snake, preserved the deathless order of the first age. While the widow of the Bore went into the forest whenever kauwari called, her people neither stole nor died; the fall into mortality came when her daughters ignored this office and met Souw in the forest. The bird's warning thus marks the threshold between the ageless world and the world of death.
