Tokosikuna, a hero associated with Gumasila in the Amphlett Islands within the Dobu Kula orbit, was born so deformed and repellent that he was despised. Transformed into a man of great beauty, he became an unrivalled Kula sailor, winning the finest valuables and the daughters of chiefs and outdoing all his rivals. Recorded by Malinowski among the myths of the southern Kula, his story celebrates the transformative power that success in the overseas exchange was believed to require.
