Hadabal, whose name is also transcribed Adabal or NIdabal and who is sometimes called the 'Adda of Ebla', was among the most frequently mentioned gods of the Eblaite archive and, beside Kura, a leading figure of the pantheon. He was probably the principal god of the Orontes valley, with chief cult centres at Larugadu and Luban, and worshipped through numerous local hypostases. His character is debated: an agricultural function is most often proposed, while Lambert's suggestion that he was a moon god (linking Larugadu to the later lunar centre Lrgt of Yarikh) is rejected by Archi on the grounds of the distribution of his cult sites. The etymology of his name is unknown. A female counterpart, referred to only as 'his lady' (Belatu), is attested but not given an independent name.
