Ihy

Egyptian · deity · old kingdom · deity

Ihy is the sound of a sistrum, personified as a small boy. The sistrum is Hathor's instrument — a rattle with a frame and loose crossbars, shaken in procession — and the noise it makes is not incidental to her worship but the substance of it: jangling, continuous, designed to induce a state. Her son is that state. He is drawn naked with a sidelock, holding the instrument, and at Dendera he has his own birth house where his nativity was celebrated every year.
