Maahes

Egyptian · deity · new kingdom · deity

Maahes is the lion cub of the lion goddess, and which goddess depends on the town: Bastet at Bubastis, Sekhmet where Memphite theology is running. The record takes the Bubastite filiation, which is the one the reference treatment leads with, and notes the other. At Leontopolis live lions were kept and fed as his form — the same institution as the Apis bull, differently housed. His name is a small piece of theology on its own: 'he who is true beside her', the son who does not leave his mother's side.
