Mehet-Weret

Mehet-Weret is the sky imagined as water and the water imagined as a cow. Egypt had several pictures of the sky running in parallel and did not mind: a woman arched over the earth, a falcon's spread wings, a flat ceiling held on posts, and a cow standing with the sun between her horns. Mehet-Weret is the last of these with the flood written into her name, which makes her the version in which the sun is carried across an ocean rather than through air — a sensible picture in a country where the sun rises out of a river.
