Pakhet

Egyptian · deity · middle kingdom · deity

Pakhet is a cat in a dry valley at night. Her name means 'she who scratches', her territory is the wadis running into the desert east of Beni Hasan, and her temple is cut into the cliff there — the Speos Artemidos, so called because Greeks arriving at a shrine of a huntress of the wild country knew exactly which of their own goddesses that was. Hatshepsut had the shrine made and left a long inscription in it.
