Unut

Unut is a hare on a pole. She is among the oldest gods in the record — predynastic, older than the writing that names her — and she survives mainly as the emblem of the fifteenth Upper Egyptian nome, which is also the district of Hermopolis and therefore of the Ogdoad. She is a hare, and also a snake, and the combination is less odd than it sounds: both are animals that appear suddenly out of the ground in numbers, which is what a fertility goddess is for.
