Emotan

Edo · mortal · eweka dynasty · mortal

Mortal-tier market-trader at the Oba market of Benin City who showed kindness to the exiled Prince Ogun (the future Ewuare the Great) during the Uwaifiokun usurpation. Deified by Ewuare's decree after her death (~1440 CE) as the canonical Edo "conscience of justice"; buried in her own market-stall hut, the grave marked with an Uruhe tree that remains a living shrine in modern Benin City. Every Oba-celebration procession pays homage to the burial site — an unbroken cult-tradition spanning ~580 years.
