Hinken (god of hunting and game-luck)

Even · deity · Even traditional religion; continuing · deity

Hinken (Even Хинкэн; also Khinken, Shinken) is the Even god of hunting and game-luck, a deity of first importance for a hunting and reindeer-herding people. He dwells on the sixth heaven, below the celestial bodies of the seventh. His shadow is said to fall upon the beasts and birds, and from this belief springs the Even system of clan protector-animals: the Kukuyun clan is watched over by the Siberian jay, the Delyankin by the crow, the Kingalag by the crane, the Tüsegir by the swan, the Memel by the bear, and so on. He is invoked in the hunting blessings and incantations that form a distinctive small genre of Even oral tradition, and the same hunting-patron is recognised under cognate names among the neighbouring Evenki, Negidal and Oroch.
