TYPE numen AND NOT deity, BECAUSE THE NAME IS A DESCRIPTION. Veden emo is nearer to a title than to a personal name and the same phrase is used in later folklore of water-spirits generally; what is certain is that Agricola listed it among twelve Karelian gods with a function of its own, and the record holds it on that footing and no higher. The corpus already holds Ahti and Vellamo, who are the named water-gods of the Kalevala; no edge is drawn to either, because the sources do not draw one. Carries a verified-solitary verdict.
