Ahmad Kunjar

Fur · mortal · Fur traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Ahmad Kunjar is the eponymous forefather of the Kunjara (also Konjara or Kunjaara), the leading section of the Fur and the stock from which the Keira sultans traced their descent. In the charter legend he is a son of the stranger-ancestor Ahmad al-Maqur, succeeding his father in Darfur while his brother Musa carried the line west into Wadai. Little narrative attaches to him beyond this genealogical role: he exists in tradition chiefly to name a people and anchor the royal pedigree, a common function of eponymous ancestors in Darfurian oral history. Sources differ over the precise ordering of al-Maqur's sons and over whether Kunjar and the great lawgiver Daali belong to the same generation.
