Sakumo is among the most important of the Ga kpele deities: the god of war and of the Sakumo lagoon, credited in tradition with leading the Ga people in their migrations and wars. His priest, the Sakumo wulomo, historically held quasi-political authority in Accra, and his shrine remains one of the town's courts of first appeal in spiritual disputes and hosts central rites of the Homowo festival cycle.
