Ngorieru is a great adaro, a powerful nature-spirit of the sea and sky, localized at Cape Surville (Star Harbour) on San Cristoval and recorded by C.E. Fox. The adaro are beings associated with the sun, the rainbow, and the waterspout: they travel along the rainbow-bridge and in the spinning column of the waterspout, and send sickness with their shafts upon those who cross them at sea. Ngorieru is reckoned among the most feared of them, master of sharks and of the offshore waters about his cape. He belongs to the wider south-east Solomonic spirit-world of which the Nggela adaro and tindalo, and the vigona, form the northern part, and stands here as one of its few individually named members.
