Yaboaine

Goodenough Island · deity · Goodenough Island traditional religion; continuing · deity

Yaboaine (also Yabowaine) is the principal deity of the Bwaidoga (Bwaidoka) people of eastern Goodenough Island as recorded in the early ethnography of Jenness and Ballantyne. He presided over success in warfare, the hunt and the gardens, received offerings and first-fruits, and was linked with the spirits of the dead. Warriors invoked him before battle, and his favour was sought for the abundance of taro.
