Mortal Aethiopian princess (or wife of Merops king of the Aethiopians) per the Ovidian tradition; mother of Phaethon and of the Heliades by Helios. The mortal-Clymene reading is the strict-criterion-demigod-qualifying parentage for Phaethon. A parallel Hesiodic tradition makes Clymene one of the Oceanid daughters of Tethys and Oceanus, which would make Phaethon two-divine-parented and deity-tier — that variant is flagged on this entry but not adopted as primary.
