The corpus held twenty-odd characters out of this poem and not the poet, while holding Vyasa, the author of the other epic, along with his parents and his sons. That asymmetry is this lane in miniature. Valmiki's own place inside the story — sheltering the exiled Sita, raising Lava and Kusha — is not recorded here, because Lava and Kusha are BLOCKED census rows and a record should not narrate an episode whose other parties the registry does not hold.
