Tatei Haramara

Huichol · deity · primordial · deity

Tatéi Haramara, 'Our Mother the Sea,' is the Huichol goddess who is the Pacific Ocean itself, one of the several great 'Our Mothers' (Tateima) associated with water and rain. Her cult centres on the western edge of the Wixárika sacred geography at San Blas, Nayarit, where the white rock Waxiewe rises from the surf and receives the offerings of pilgrims. As primeval water she marks the western pole of the cosmos, balancing the eastern desert of Wirikuta where the peyote grows, and the moisture that rises from her body is understood to return to the highlands as the fertilizing rain.
