Kevembuangga

Iatmul · demigod · Iatmul traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Kevembuangga is the culture hero of the Iatmul separation myth. When the primeval crocodile Kavwokmali kept the mud forever suspended by his paddling, Kevembuangga came with his spear and killed him. With the churning stilled, the mud sank to the bottom and hardened, and dry land appeared where the first ancestors could stand. His act is the decisive gesture of cosmic ordering in the Iatmul account of origins, transforming an undivided watery chaos into the layered world of earth and water.
