Obumo, often called Abasi Obumo, is the Ibibio god of thunder, glossed by Talbot as 'the Thunderer.' Born of the Great Mother Eka Abasi by her own might, he is at once her son and her consort, and his rites are commonly performed at the holy pools and rocks held to be her earthly manifestations. To the mass of ordinary worshippers, who are not admitted to the esoteric teaching about Eka Abasi, Obumo appears as the chief deity of the tribe, his power made manifest in the crash of storms. He is distinct from the supreme creator Abasi, belonging instead to the older maternal cosmogony centred on Eka Abasi.
