Baingap

Ilahita Arapesh · numen · Ilahita Arapesh traditional religion; continuing · numen

Baingap is a named figure of Ilahita Arapesh oral tradition, the protagonist of an origin narrative set in the mythic past when the present order of ritual and subsistence was established. Accounts of the narrative vary between tellings, and such myths are understood in the scholarship as charters for the Tambaran cult and for the relations between the sexes and the generations rather than as fixed texts.
