Falanga is the junior tambaran of the Ilahita cult, the spirit of the first initiatory grade. It receives boys at the base of the graded sequence and opens the long path of revelation that ascends through Lefin and Maolimu to the two Nggwal grades. As the least secret of the tambarans, Falanga is the initiand's first encounter with the hidden order of the men's society.
