Aran is the giantess of Ilocano origin lore, companion of the world-shaping giant Angalo. Recorded in variant forms such as Angngarab, she stands with him as one of the two primordial giants from whom the Ilocano people are said to descend. Where Angalo's role is to hew and heap the land, Aran's is generative and ancestral: the pairing frames the peopling of the Ilocos as the offspring of a giant man and a giant woman. Sources differ on the exact form of her name and on how sharply she is distinguished from the giant consorts of neighbouring northern Luzon traditions.
